Oh noes! National Poetry Month ends

Another Unfortunate Choice
by Wendy Cope

I think I am in love with A. E. Housman,
Which puts me in a worse-than-usual fix.
No woman ever stood a chance with Housman
And he's been dead since 1936.

I always forget how much I like Wendy Cope's poetry. :-)
I only know Housman ever existed because of a Star trek novel. A poem of his was printed in the front of The Pandora Principle, which is probably my favorite Trek novel.

That poem was a favorite of mine all through jr high and high school. I only remember the last part of it now:

Hope lies to mortals
and most believe her
but man's deceiver
was never mine
Forgive me, I'm now going to weep for your state's educational system. Didn't they have you read even "A Shropshire Lad" in high school?
Do you know...I don't know whether they did or not. I'm assuming they did, however, I was gone for a good bit of my senior year because of all the back surgery I had. Unfortunately, that would have been the year we would have studied it. As it is, the only thing I remember from that year is Chaucer and Shakespeare.

Normally, I would have read through the whole book even if I knew we weren't going to go over the material -I just liked reading. In too much pain that year and had too much other work to do. :(
