Very brief aside

Have been re-reading The Music School, my fave collection of Updike short stories, and now I want to read the story that starts:

My name is Rupert Giles, and I exist in time.

Not to mention the story that starts:

The skylight above the library was the color of a palimpsest, scoured to dead illegibility.

I could play this game for a long time. Heh.

Oh, no, this post totally fascinates me, and is totally over my head! Would you like to expand on your thought?

(I comment because I'm supposed to be GilesWatcher posting, and procrastinatoin is a crucial part of the process.)
Heh. Sometimes if I stop to read what I'm gathering to post, it takes forever to do :)

I'm taking first lines of stories and adapting them to be Giles-y. The second one is an adaptation of the first line of William Gibson's novel Neuromancer: "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." The first one is a straight version of the first line of John Updike's story "The Music School": "My name is Alfred Schweigen and I exist in time."

You could imagine doing this with other famous opening lines:
Call me Giles. Some years ago - never mind how long precisely - having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me in Sunnydale, I thought I would drive about a little and see the lonelier part of the States. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation.
I know what you mean about posting! I have to stop and check out other stuff that I find, like Wes fic, or Beccaelizabeth's lj, or icons... :)

I love this famous-first-lines as adapted to Giles idea! 'S'all I need: another Gilesy obsession to interfere with Real Life!

No, wait, maybe that is *exactly* what I need, considering what RL often tends to be like.
