In a sentence in a book there there lived a colon. Not a long, verbose, overcomplicated sentence, filled with phrases and clauses and dangling participles, nor yet a terse, simple, brief sentence, without an adverb or an adjectival phrase: it was a Tolkien-sentence, and that means commas.
