I'm home again! I have 2 cats, 2 dogs, and 1 husband. The house is more or less exactly as it was when I left it, with no burning to the ground incidents. Mr P did do dishes, didn't do laundry. His thumb is nearly healed up from his box cutter accident. Waiting for me were a pair of new climbing shoes in the right size (yay) and the complete BSG on Bluray (we can now continue our viewing).

I drove more than 4000 miles in 2 weeks, killed many many bugs (all splattered over the nose of my car), averaged about 30mpg, and saw 3 new states (North Dakota, Montana, and Idaho). I met many new people! I got only a little bit of writing done. That's okay. It was a vacation! My mind is now fully vacated.

The plan: Do laundry, resume working out at the gym, resume climbing at the other gym, start working on orig fic short story spasms. Write fanfic drabbles. Pat the cats. Declutter the house. Write some trip reports with more detail than this rather scattered one.

From today's fandom secrets, #102. Yessssss! I did this when I was a teenager. No, really, I sought out obscure Westerns featuring De Kelley just to see him, doing it the hard way in those pre-Internet days. I am so happy that the new Trek movie has brought new fans to the original Trek series and to those lovely actors.

[info]chaletian: "This Is What's Next" and "Mr Kirk of Iowa" - gen, FRC, West Wing/NuTrek crossover

Meet Jed Bartlet, president of the United Federation of Planets. Utterly delicious crack in some ways, and also completely plausible in others. The CJ voice is particularly great.

Today was all about the Star Trek indulgence with [info]sahiya, who wanted an introduction to the original series canon. We watched "The Naked Time" and "The Corbomite Maneuver", two first season classics. Now we're watching Merlin, and is increasingly evident that Uther is right to kill every single magic user he encounters. They're all amazingly evil and piling up a huge bodycount. Uther and Morgana are so married, oh my god, she sits on a throne next to him and he keeps asking her advice. Sans ASH I don't think I'd be giving the series a re-watch, although I do admit the Merlin-Arthur interaction is satisfyingly snarky.

Also, Arfur is a prat.

We started out with a couple of hours in a cafe, where I discovered that my approach to the remix wasn't quite right, but I did find one that was. I have the shape of it in my head now. I might live to fail to plan again.

Random geekery: Prowl is the bomb. Growl notifications pushed to your iPhone!

Tonight's BPAL: St John's Eve. A summer bonfire, with frankincense and myrrh, bay rum, and white rose. Wow, wow, wow. Smoky incense. It smells just like the bowl of fine sand that [info]kivrin gave me smells after I've burned sticky resinous incense and charcoal in it.

I think I want to see Star Trek a fourth time. Even though I've already memorized half the dialog by accident. I'm pretty sure Mr Pedia will cheerfully go with me again.

Yeah. He says he will. Okay then.

I won't spoil any plot points. This is almost completely a discussion about the new actors in the roles. I'll save the spoilery discussion for a second post.

This is a largely positive reaction... )

My summary: Most fun Trek movie since the one with the whales; Wrath of Khan is still the "best", but that's okay. See it this weekend in a crowded theater for maximal fun. I'm gonna go see it again.
