Giles/Xander watcher
At [info]fuzzyboo03's request (from last month), DVD commentary on "Memory". The story itself isn't very kinky (unless tattooing bothers you), but it takes place in the context of a fairly kinky Giles/Xander relationship, set post-Chosen. Do not follow the cut if any of these traits displease you.

A tonal mess... )

I've been mostly AFK over the weekend, doing stuff with the spousal unit. Last week was devoted to working out and napping by turns; I was also mostly not looking at the Intertubes. Today vacation ends, and regular Antenna service resumes, with this new twist of no official employment. In other words, I buckle down and get back to work on my own projects instead of somebody else's. Whee!

Some of those projects are fanfictional, which is why I mention it here. I have so many stories to tell buzzing around in my head right now.

But let's get things rolling with a DVD commentary! Whaddya want commentated, thus definitively expressing your doubt for this doctrine about the death of the author? My dvd commentary tag has the stories I've already done commentary for. My fic archive has a definitive list of the candidates.
Giles/Buffy chosen

For [info]fuzzyboo03, commentary on "A Bottle of Jack Daniels Following Apocalypse", a story about Giles and Buffy (and Xander) in a motel room post-Chosen, drinking to fallen friends. Anya and Spike are discussed. There's a bit of non-explicit sex and some accidental voyeurism, so skip the commentary if these things are not of interest to you.

The commentary is much more about the story this time and less about writing craft.

A bottle of Jack in a motel room, or, Giles tells stories... )

4th-Feb-2009 01:20 pm - "Substitute" commentary (gen, FRT)
Giles/Xander becoming

[info]psychoadept asked for commentary on "Substitute", a gen story about what happened after Xander rescued Giles from Angelus's mansion in "Becoming". It was remixed by [info]nwhepcat as "Copper and Moonlight" (The Mimi and Rudolfo Remix)".

It's an early story: my third full-length completed fanfic. It started life as a entry for [info]headrush100's hurt/comfort ficathon, but I was so nervous about sticking my neck out that I didn't actually sign up for the ficathon. I just wrote it and posted it on the same day or thereabouts. In my head, this has always been part of a larger storyline, and this is indicated by its presence in the "Breaking Glass" verse on my archive site.

Substitute... )

I'm bored. Want some DVD commentary? Now is your time to ask for it. I'll probably write something craft-centric, but there's no predicting. First two comers. Please, for pity's sake, choose shorter stories.

My dvd commentary tag has the stories I've already done commentary for. My archive has a definitive list of the candidates.
Giles/Ethan friends
As requested by [info]penwiper26, DVD commentary on "Gas-Ring Alchemy", in which Giles meets Ethan for the first time. This is setup for "Breaking Glass", which looks at the pair a few months later. I rated it FRM, but probably it's really a teen rating, though it does indirectly discuss sex and drugs. It's allusive, has a whacky structure with some Jungian metaphorical whatsits, and is also just a story about a young man falling in love.

I often say that this story is one of my personal favorites. It's the whole storyline it's part of, which includes "Breaking Glass" and "Substitute" and a whole lot of other stuff you guys haven't seen yet because it's not really in a finished state. Some day...

The working title was "January weekend", which is as tedious as all my working titles are, but kept me focused.

Nigredo. Albedo. Rubedo. )
Giles/Buffy chosen
The third and final story commentary for [info]seldomifever. This one is for "Please", an unfinished story written only when requested as part of the tagfic game. This story is in the universe of Tradition & Protocol, though it's maybe a year later in time.

it carries warnings for mild kink (some mellow bondage, but also references to existing body piercings) and smutty talk. It spoils some things about where I'm going in the T&P storyline, though not really in any meaningful way. Also, Giles's braces guest-star.

This commentary goes craft-heavy.

Giles knotted his tie... )
Giles/Buffy helpless
Item #2 on the list of three short BG fics [info]seldomifever wants commentary for: "Braces and Overalls, or, Because Watchers and Slayers belong together", about 2400 words of Cruciamentum followup that touches on my favorite themes of Watcher/Slayer mystical foofahrah, the season 3 Gilesy wardrobe (the sexiest of the entire series, in my opinion) and the much-beloved snark.

This one was one of my first poll response fics. The flist wanted "Snitty in braces mode Giles, with Buffy, pr0n, with a medium amount of plot," so that's what I shot for. Except it wasn't prawny hardly at all, and in retrospect maybe should have been even less prawny.

19th-Aug-2008 04:52 pm - "Planning Ahead" commentary (BG, FRT)
Giles/Buffy helpless
[info]seldomifever asked for commentary on three short Giles/Buffy stories. Here's the first.

A B/G ficlet of comfort following knife-related incidents, for [info]glimmergirl

Glim had an accident with a knife similar to Buffy's, though perhaps involving considerably fewer vampires. So I thought maybe I'd write something distracting. 600 words of fluffy h/c resulted. As did Glim's remix of this story: "Unplanned and Imperfect".

A little hurt and little comfort and a little of the peeking... )
17th-Aug-2008 06:34 pm - "Breaking Glass" gets some love
Giles/Ethan 2
I'm tickled pink to report that "Breaking Glass", a story about Giles and Ethan on holiday, about magic, and about portals, got some lovely attention from the Fang Fetish Awards round 9. The notes from the judges made me particularly happy.

And I note that flistians [info]sahiya, [info]ubiquirk, [info]firefly_124, and [info]mireille719 also got some well-deserved kudos. The fandom was ready for stories about Giles and Snape, ready and eager. More crossovers, please!
You'll notice, perhaps, a new feature of my all-singing, all-dancing, all-automated, untouched-by-human-hands fic archive: serieses now have all in one printable versions. E.g., the Breaking-Glass-verse stories. My question for you: how do you like your printable versions? Are they more useful when tuned for offline electronic reading or do you really print them? Would you prefer PDFs?

In other news, I think I might be in love with Scrivener, but I need to live with it a while longer before I'm sure. Most "writer's editors" are gimmicky junk; just use a plain-text editor, shut up, and write. There is no silver bullet. But Scrivener seems to provide me with the tool that I need when I'm outlining, and to transition well to prose-writing. And it imports from MultiMarkdown-formatted text files, which is the plain text markup mode I use for all my story source.

Okay. One more item for tonight. There will be no predictable new fic from me for a while: the WIP I chose to make progress in is, um, gonna take about 50K more words to conclude. Hey, at least I now have an outline I can believe in telling me I'll need all those words! Anyway. No new fic any time soon. So, to scratch what I hope is a mutual itch, DVD commentary time, in which we all prove that the author isn't dead to us no matter what the critics say.

Pick a story that I haven't done already. I'll write commentary. Maybe I'll do two, if inspired.

Watson likely stories
I signed up in [info]fanficdvdcomm, 'cause I love reading commentaries and writing them. In my signup I said that other people writing commentaries is cool, too. Though the trend does make me giggle in some ways: Is the author dead or not? Make up your minds, people!
Giles/Xander secret
DVD commentary on "Not an Argyle Socks Kind of Guy", as requested by [info]penwiper26. The story is quite short, features Giles/Xander, and alludes to smut but contains little itself.

Socks? Yes, socks. )

DVD commentary on Blackmail, as requested by [info]violetisblue. The story is Giles/Buffy, most definitely adult, and most definitely kinky in a leather sense, so do not follow the cut if any of these traits displease you.

11th-Apr-2007 06:11 pm - "Breathing" commentary
Giles/Buffy chosen
At long last, DVD commentary on "Breathing" for [info]sahiya!

"Breathing": part 1 / part 2 / part 3 - ( all in one file )

Post-Grave hurt/comfort, where the hurts and the comforts are somewhat complex. Giles and Buffy and Dawn in England, with a strangely-behaving Willow at the coven. Guest appearances by a Paris-bound Anya and a deus ex machina Xander. Ulp.

You might want to read the postmortem before you begin the commentary. It's not long. Unlike the commentary, which is so long that I put it on its own page on my archive site.
23rd-Mar-2007 07:47 pm - "Breaking Glass" commentary part 1/2
concentrating
At [info]kivrin's request, DVD commentary on "Breaking Glass", a tale of Giles and Ethan at Oxford. It's rated FRAO for sex and drugs, so avoid the commentary if these distress you. I also did a postmortem on this story.

I love the sound of breaking glass... )

DVD commentary concludes in part 2.

At [info]hobgoblinn's request, commentary on my first significant Buffy story, which was a crossover with the world of Sherlock Holmes.

The DVD Commentary Meme:

If you've ever watched your favorite dvds, and then found yourself eager to hear exactly what the actors, directors, writers and even production designers thought about making the episode, the movie, or whatever - you'll know sometimes the best parts of dvds are hearing the commentaries. Getting into an actor's feelings about the character they play, getting the background behind a writer's plans and metaphors, even just getting the stupid anecdotal stuff that makes you laugh, it's all good.

Ask me about any story, and I'll do a DVD commentary for it! Satisfy your curiosity!

(Meme infection passed along by [info]mireille719.) You can find stories linked from my 2006 roundup page, with more recent stuff on the first page of the "fiction" tag listing.

I've never done this, and it seems like fun. Plus I haven't posted any fiction since the beginning of the month, and I'm probably not going to have anything finished for another two weeks at least. I feel like I should be posting something. At least those stories are progressing quietly: a couple thousand words into a first draft of the Xander story, and I've made a bunch of notes about my intentions for the remix.
