Return of the Ficpoll (Oasis of hurt/comfort edition)

I woke up this morning with an urge to write h/c. Mostly what I need is a short-ish thing to work on as a break from Iceland that is not also a giant plotty thing. Because all I have right now are complicated plotty things, and context-switching is becoming tricky. I needs me some idfic as a change of pace.

Ways in which this poll oppresses me:

You left out the other half of my OTP!
2(10.0%)
You left out my favorite h/c trope!
1(5.0%)
Didn't you read my response to the previous question? I hate h/c! You should be writing (fill in name of other genre here) instead.
0(0.0%)
You do not need more ideas for stories. You need to finish some of the existing ones.
3(15.0%)
You used radio buttons on one question!
2(10.0%)
Why are they still called radio buttons, anyway? Car radios haven't had them for 20 years or more.
12(60.0%)

Essay question: prompt more specifically or vent your outrage at some aspect of this poll.

I really ought to make you people make choices and fill in the little radio buttons. 'Cause I know one of you is going to torment me by checking every single box. I'm looking at you, NutterBudgie. (The comfort I suggest to make up for poll-torment is "tea" plus "meandering conversation".)

Random promotion: tabloid_btvs: a challenge made for the Buffyverse or what? We got your swamp monsters right here. (Perhaps too suitable: The X-Files. That's what we'd call too on the nose.)

Bonus random: "I Often Dream of Trains", 2008 live performance from what seems to have been a live performance of the whole album. It was a Robyn Hitchcock sort of weekend for me. Have some more Robyn.

I have discovered an enormous weakness for h/c that's very heavy on the "traumatic life circumstances" h, ala <lj-user="helenish">. It's somewhat horrifying.
Hmm, perhaps I could read some of Helenish's HP stuff. Don't know her other fandoms, and have never been into reading fic for fandoms I don't know at all.
Oh FFS. Let's try this again:

Alright, so I was painstakingly un-doing the last few hours' work on some rather finicky lace and thinking about Helenish and h/c and somehow it evolved into a whole big list o' recs. Brace yourself:

H/C heavy on H:

Theft of Assets, Destruction of Property by Helenish, Harry Potter

My favorite of helenish's HP stories.

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 all by Greywolf, Star Trek: TOS (not movieverse)

Alright, totally apropos of nothing, but so awesome I had to share. VERY epic- each "part" is actually a self-contained story. Involves capture by aliens, slavery, irreversible physical damage and bureaucratic corruption. Plus bonus!awesome!McCoy. :)

Unnamed Xander-torture story by anonymous author wtf_is_shame. You may have already read this (heck, you may know who he/she really is!) but it is a masterpiece of the very, very heavy H genre. Chapters were posted chronologically.

BDSM-verse (no, seriously, this segue makes sense!)

Okay, so this may require some explanation if you haven't already heard of it. This Stargate: Atlantis author, xanthe, comes up with the idea of a universe where sexuality is determined primarily by whether one is a "top" or a "sub," rather than by gender. Xanthe's stories are basically romance novels set in a BDSM universe. But then, Helenish got ahold of it (thus connecting it to the h/c section above, ha!) and used the concept to critique gender roles, sexuality, personal identity and all sorts of other awesome stuff. I don't read SG: Atlantis myself, but I made an exception for this:

Takes Clothes Off As Directed by Helenish, Stargate: Atlantis

After Helenish's story created some fandom consternation (Xanthe-fans getting pissed that she was making their happy fairytale BDSM-land all gritty and realistic with oppression of subs, etc), more people started writing BDSM-verse fic. If you'd prefer fic in a fandom you watch, these House fics by Aris are fantastic. Personally, I think almost all the House characters make more sense in this BDSMverse, given how much of the show is driven by power dynamics.

Directedverse fics by Aris, House M.D. (best read chronologically)

Phew!
I was going to check all of them, too, but decided that wasn't fair. I'd like to see Buffy comfort Giles (really, really comfort) after Jenny's death. I hate Jenny. But really only because she's not Buffy.
Poor Jenny.
Hrm. This is not the direction of the poll, but I could write this. Should write this. Have planned to write this.
Hypothermia with rain as a comfort would be, uh, rather difficult to write. I think. tick tick tickety tick.
I am going to give you hypothermia h/c with rain in the Iceland story. It'll work, no worries. And after that, there'll be ash falling from the sky.
